Show Support to Armed Forces
Whether or not you support the military actions in Afghanistan and Iraq, I and my fellow members of the Jacksonville Bold City Lions Club, primarily professional men and women from mandarin and Southside, believe we have to support our armed forces.

Bold City Lions Club Believes a show of personal support is far superior to sending money you can't afford to spend.

That's why we're part of the AnySoldier.US ... What to Send program, through which you can send extra items you myght already have.

Items requested by the soldiers and support groups include hand sanitizer, foot powder, sun block, garbage bags, Lysol, bug spray, trash bags and toilet paper.  Hard candy is good, but not chocolate.  You can send stationery, postage stamps, small paperback books and needlepoint projects (please make sure they're small).

The size of the items you send is important, since the soldiers move a lot and must carry these items with them.

Look around the house, apartment and offices.  What do have to spare?  How about coffee (instand and regular), coffee filters, or even metal coffee cups (the camping types)?  What about coffee makers, hot plates, canned nuts, chips, or decent can openers?

If you'd like to contribute food, how about HeaterMeals?  They are good meals which include heaters and other supplies just right for cold nights!  HeaterMeals offer a special price to those helping AnySoldier.  Call their sales department at 1-800-503-4483, and tell them you want to send meals to the AnySoldier effort.  They do the rest.  They will even include a note if you want.

Here are some other food items requested by soldiers: pre-sweetened, powdered drinks (Kool-aid, Gatorade, etc.), canned soups (chunky chicken, beef, etc.), and canned tuna.  (Don't send anything home-cooked.  Soldiers are told to throw away food items that are not in factory packages.)

Personal items needed include anti-bacterial wipes, anti-fungal foot cream or foot powder (no aerosol bottles), Band-Aids, cough lozenges, small packs of Kleenex, Shower-to-Shower powder, combs, writing paper, pens, envelopes, lip balm, Q-Tips, nail clippers, eye drops (the cleaning kind, because of sand storms, put in a plastic bag before sending), and shower shoes (to air the soldiers' feet when they get a break).

In addition, you can send small containers of Tylenol or Motrin, small tubes of toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorand, soap or shampoo.

Also, remember the many women soldiers!  If your package is intended for female soldiers only, be sure to address the package, "Attn: Any Female Soldier."

Here are a few more requested items: Beanie Baby toys (for soldiers to give to kids), comics, paperback books, crossword puzzle books, sports-related items (baseballs, baseball gloves, footballs, of Frisbees), AA batteries, music CDs, portable CD players, and phone cards (AT&T has a special deal for service members and their families.).

Like other Lions Clubs around the world, the B9ld City Lions Club is committed to public service projects and to helping the blind and the visually and hearing-impaired worldwide.

Thank you for caring!
